In Fine Art courses, students will sharpen their skills in the usage of different materials, tools, and techniques to create visual arts and practice creative thinking and concept building while making extensive studio projects.
Drawing
Students begin this class by practicing fundamental rendering techniques, then move on to developing strategies to combine diverse media, modes of representation, and elements of design to express individual content. Research and invention are encouraged. The curriculum culminates in the completion of a series of drawings that display formal and conceptual maturity.

Painting

Watercolor Technique
This course builds on foundational watercolor skills, introducing students to advanced techniques such as layering, glazing, color mixing, atmospheric perspective, and negative space painting. Through guided exercises and a final personal project, students will deepen their understanding of color control, transparency, and composition while developing their unique artistic voice.

Pencil Technique
This class is aimed towards students who have completed the Basic Drawing Foundation course or for students who have acquired the foundation skills of drawing. This class consists of seven classes for three hours each. Students will learn in detail the process of creating tone, volume, and texture using a pencil, which is a basic material for drawing. Each section is composed to experience from a simple drawing to that which requires more technique. Video tutorials, which are easy to follow, are provided for students who wish to further develop and improve their skills. This class is recommended for students who wish to prepare for an art portfolio or art competition after having completed Basic Drawing at Ashcan Studio of Art.

Color Pencil Technique
This class is aimed towards students who wish to improve their overall understanding of colored pencils and techniques. This class consists of seven classes for three hours each. It is intended for students who have completed the Basic Foundation courses at Ashcan Studio of Art and anticipate preparing for an art portfolio or art competition. From basic skills to intermediate and advanced techniques, this course is designed to provide ample experience in a short amount of time. Portrait Drawing
Portrait I course covers comprehensive methods for developing a successful portrait. Students will gain a better understanding of a face proportion, head structure, and construction of each facial feature, and will learn how to utilize this knowledge to construct an accurate drawing. Students will also learn about the application of different lighting, angle, and perspective through demonstration, practice, and projects.

Portrait Painting
Portrait II course will guide students through the process of color portrait production. In this course, students will be introduced to how to mix colors for different shades of skin tones and build textures in portrait painting. Students will learn how to discover ways to represent a subject’s identity through content, color, and texture, by creating portrait paintings in different skin colors, facial structures, and styles.

Animal & Object Sculpture
Animal & Object Sculpture course helps students build a strong understanding of 3D form through a single sculpting project developed over the entire course. Starting with a podium design, students explore their ideas while practicing the basics of volume and structure using clay. Then, by choosing a personal subject—such as an animal or object—they build a meaningful sculpture step by step. Through this process, students learn how to construct form, strengthen technical skills, and express ideas through three-dimensional design.

Relief Sculpture
The Relief Sculpture course teaches students how to create relief sculptures using clay, as well as mold-making and casting techniques. Relief sculpture adds a unique visual effect by combining flat and three-dimensional elements, allowing for deeper expression. It enables students to explore various materials and techniques, enhancing their creativity. Students can choose to create themes such as faces, animals, or patterns, or they can develop their own creative works. By the end of the course, each student will have completed a unique and original relief sculpture.

Advanced Portrait Fauvist Painting
The Expressive Color: Fauvist Style Portrait Painting course is designed for students to explore bold color expression in portrait art through both digital and traditional methods. Students will study Fauvist portraits and create their own expressive digital portraits on the iPad using color palettes inspired by Fauvist masterpieces. They will learn how to use bright, emotional colors to transform facial features in creative ways. For the final project, students will paint a portrait of themselves or a family member on canvas, bringing their digital work to life with acrylic paints in the Fauvist style.

Advanced Landscape Fauvist Style Painting
The Expressive Color: Fauvist Style Landscape Painting course is designed for students to explore vibrant color expression in landscape art through digital tools. Students will learn about the Fauvist movement and how artists used bold, unnatural colors to express mood and energy in nature. Using an iPad, they will digitally transform reference photos—such as parks, streets, or mountains—into colorful Fauvist-style landscapes. Sea Creature Drawing
The Sea Creature Illustration course is an advanced class, the second in our book-creation series for 3rd to 5th graders, introducing them to the vibrant and diverse world of marine life through art. Using pens as their primary medium, students will learn to observe, draw, and depict the textures of various sea creatures, from seashells and fish to sea plants and intricate patterns. This course encourages creativity and critical thinking as students brainstorm and plan the content of their own sketchbooks, documenting their discoveries and illustrations.
